The market structurally expects unders here, and the grading data says that expectation is earned.
Why assists run under so often
The dependency problem. A point guard can deliver twelve perfect pockets of space and finish with four assists because the shooters went cold. Points are one player's variance; assists are one player's decisions multiplied by five teammates' shooting. That compounding pushes outcomes below expectation more often than intuition suggests, and the books' low lines still get cleared less than 41 percent of the time in our sample.
Blowouts make it worse: playmakers sit fourth quarters, and assists are the stat most concentrated in the hands of exactly the players who get rested.
What actually predicts assist production
Usage as the primary creator, first: assists concentrate on whoever initiates the offense, and a backup point guard inheriting starter minutes is the single most reliable assist-prop catalyst in basketball. Teammate shooting quality, second: the same passes become more assists in a lineup of shooters, which makes lineup news double-relevant here. Matchup pace and defensive scheme, third: teams that switch everything and pack the paint suppress assist totals in measurable, position-specific ways.
How to evaluate an assists line
The standard loop, with extra skepticism toward overs. Pull the player's actual hit rate at the exact line over a meaningful recent sample, weight the games matching tonight's lineup reality, check the opponent's defense-versus-position numbers against guards, and convert the price honestly. At plus money the over needs less than half, which is the one structural mercy of this market: +146 demands only 40.7 percent, almost exactly the market's pooled rate, so a player with genuine evidence above that is a real candidate.
